Lyra Shanti's _Sediments_ is an earnest, emotional collection of poetry. Full of richly imagined landscapes, each self-contained piece carries various notes of longing, uniting the work into an overarching symphony of yearning.

Lyra's use of mythical and fantastical imagery is delightful. Certain potent symbols are repeated - fathers, snakes and heroes; oceans, wine and blood; a curiously black dresser. Although the themes are ancient, the language is fresh; the best lines linger and almost beg to be spoken aloud. "The dream will spill its liquid clue", sighs one that stayed with me for hours.

Stephanie McGee and Timothy Casey's illustrations are vibrant and candy-colored at first glance, but contain unexpected darkness, like a child's Crayola drawing of a nightmare. The moods shift easily from tormented anger to intense desire to dreamy sensuality, love songs mingling with startlingly raw tirades of passionate fury.
