Kaza is a wonderful new writer who has provided us with her own world of magic and fantasy for young adult readers. This and her second book Erec Rex: The Monsters of Otherness (Erec Rex) (Erec Rex) (Erec Rex) are the first entries in the Erec Rex series. The third is due out in October (2008) and she is actively writing more in the series.

I strongly recommend both of these books for young and old readers alike and everyone in between. Kaza is a remarkable woman with a vivid imagination who juggles parental duties over four younger children with her love of writing. The Erec Rex series is no Harry Potter wannabe and improves on the genre considerably. I have always had problems with Harry's tendency toward lying and while it may be in character, I am not happy that he has become such a hero for kids in their formative years. Harry's lies never seem to catch up to him and that has always been a problem for me.

Erec, on the other hand, believes in honesty and is bothered when information he would like to know (well, more like answers to some of his life's puzzles) is withheld. When he is told to lie, he doesn't like it and does it only out of necessity (and on strong advice of adults around him). This isn't to say that Erec is a perfect child (he isn't), but he tries to do what he believes is right. Yes, Harry does what he believes is right, too, but the lack of ethics where it comes to being fully honest and truthful is a dangerous flaw in the Harry Potter series.

While this first story had some predictability, it also had some interesting twists, making it a fun read. (I completed it in about seven or eight hours.) At the end of this first story, Erec is told that he must go on 12 quests, which has a tie-in to the Hercules legend. But again, I need to stress that Erec is his own person.

The only complaint that I have about this novel is that some of the descriptions are not sufficiently clear to paint a scene picture (they were a bit on the confusing side), which can be attributed to this being Kaza's first novel. Her next book, The Monsters of Otherness, doesn't have that problem.

I use a scale of 1 to 10 in rating books and give The Dragon's Eye an 8, which is better than any of the Harry Potter books (and I've read them all).

If you like to play in magical worlds, enjoy adventures of discovery, and enjoy budding friendship this series is for you!
This is a very fun book! There is mystery, magic, danger, adventure, friendship, and family. It is geared slightly more towards younger readers; however, I found this a rather enjoyable read with the promise of fun future adventures.
This book was fun and exciting up until the end. Instead of leaving me breathless with anticipation for the next book; it left me befuddled with a great big, "HUH?" The book was so well paced until the end and then we jumped from the party, to home, to the past...boom, boom, boom...too many scenes, too little information.

I found myself leafing back through the pages to see if any had stuck together and I had missed something important. No luck.

My 12 year old is reading it next. Maybe he can explain it to me.
This was a great read till book #5. The series stops with 8 of 12 quests completed. It would be like stopping Harry Potter at book #5...Fan page said book 6 is in works but that's in 2014.. Don't start because there is no ending..
I found this book, read it and loved it. I could not set my kindle down.

The book starts out very slow. As you read, each chapter leaves wanting more. The story is very vague in the beginning and slowly but surely comes together piece by piece. Things in book 2 refer back to small details in the first book that leave you saying "wow, now I get it".

I will end it on if you like the "Mageborn series" you will love this one as well.

Also if you read these and like them and want a little darker concept then read the the Mageborn series as well.
Bought The Dragon's Eye for my grandson, he loves this book. Waiting for a phone call from my grandson wanting the next in the series.
I don't have a problem with Potter-like books, because while Potter was wonderfully well-written it didn't exactly create the magical-orphan-finds-himself-and-battles-evil story line. I guess the real question is whether something is novel but "Potter-like" or is just a bald knock-off.

Here, we have a book with a slew of unique and creative touches, a hero with a different back story, and a more cheerfully adventurous feel. Most importantly, the book is clearly targeted to a younger group of readers. It sets up fast and reads fast. Chapter and episode length is manageable. There are occasional scenes that serve to summarize important earlier action and information. It is, in a sense, reader/user friendly, without ever being simplistic or silly. It does, after all, tell a good story.

All of that is to the good for a younger reader, and I can't come up with a much better book suggestion for an introduction to this particular branch of young fiction.
